Freakin’ Weekend: Lord Finesse – Isn’t He Something (Showbiz Remix) (Funky Man: The Prequel)

Lord Finesse

Lord Finesse can do it all in Hip Hop, and do it well.

The highly esteemed Hip Hop label, Splice of Life, has just issued a remastered version of the classic Lord Finesse song, “Isn’t He Something” – and it’s the perfect anthem for this weekend, or any Freakin’ Weekend for that matter. Finesse was a man ahead of his time, and may be best known (even if you weren’t aware) for his production work on Notorious B.I.G.’s classic debut Ready to Die, specifically on the track “Suicidal Thoughts”. Either way, he’s a man who deserves more due than he’s been paid.

You can purchase “Isn’t He Something” here.

Freakin’ Weekend: Sam Vicari – Heart Explosion

Sam Vicari

You can hear why Sam Vicari looks up to Elliott Smith in his music.

Chicago transplant via Indiana, Sam Vicari, writes simple and elegant guitar drive pop. “Heart Explosion” is the perfect track for the Freakin’ Weekend, providing a nice soundtrack for a drive to the beach or lazy Sunday. Heart Explosion, which is due out later this summer, was entirely funded by Vicari via the tutoring of 5th & 6th graders while also working as a barista – a true passion project, which will hopefully lead to bigger and better things for the talented singer-songwriter.

Freakin’ Weekend: Beck – Vampire Voltage No. 6

Beck

Beck plays rope a dope on “Vampire Voltage No. 6”.

“Vampire Voltage No. 6” is the B-Side of “Chemtrails”, which was on Beck’s stellar 2008 LP Modern Guilt. It’s one of my favorite Beck tracks because of it’s Jekyll/Hyde approach. Starting off with a gentle whisper, while ending in an urgent shout – matching my mixed mood, on this Freakin’ Weekend.

Freakin’ Weekend: Jets To Brazil – Sweet Avenue

Allston Rock City as I remember it.

Allston Rock City as I remember it.

Cinco de Mayo is most important to me. Ten years ago my Wife and I became a couple, which spurred on a spoiled decade – making me forever grateful for crossing paths with Jeannine.

“Sweet Avenue” by Jets to Brazil was prominent on the first Mix CD I gave her, and quickly became Our Song – thus in the innocent year of 2003 – I gained an auditory tattoo, which is forever imprinted on mind and heart.

Now that my friends, is Emo.

Freakin’ Weekend: Thurston Moore – Never Day

Thurston Moore - Trees Outside the Academy

Thurston Moore’s Trees Outside the Academy is insanely underrated.

I recently ordered the picture disc of Thurston Moore’s Trees Outside the Academy on Discogs and revisiting the album on the heels of just seeing Chelsea Light Moving has been an excellent marriage. Trees has aged very well over the past six years, and “Never Day” may be the highlight of the album. The below fan video is a great accompaniment to the Spring and the Freakin’ Weekend. Get after it my friends.

Freakin’ Weekend: Mind Spiders – Neurotic Gold

Mind Spiders

Rage against the dying of the light with Mind Spiders.

FREAKIN_WEEKEND

There’s still plenty of fire left to this Freakin’ Weekend, especially when an absolutley killer show looms on the horizon (Chelsea Light Moving @ Sinclair). I couldn’t think of a better way to pre-game than with the Fort Worth Texas based Mind Spiders, a band that plays their music with a punk ethos and pop sensibility that’d make Joey Ramone grin that goofy smile.
