Episode 85 – Top 21 Albums of 2015 (Artwork - D.Hixon)

My top 22 Album’s of 2015 Album Art mixed as one. (Artwork – D.Hixon)

2015 will go down as the most challenging & rewarding year of my life. Intense is the adjective I’d use to describe a year in which*almost* too much happened. It started with the birth of my Son Dylan – the best thing that’ll ever happen to me. Becoming a Parent is easy, becoming one worth his salt takes some earnest work & humbles you at every early turn.

I lent my Vision Vibes to some great people at WEMF Radio – a perfectly eclectic Family, shout out to Nash, Crespo, Ryan SpaldingFar From Normal, and Andrew Lowery. I also navigated the waters of changing a long time job and career while buying my first Home. It felt like a lot.

All said, future eyes will gleam on 2015 with a favored smile – I’m a lucky man, and through it all, I had some killer music to push me over both the highs & lows. These 22 albums are what stood most out to me in this intensely fantastic year of 2015. Huzzah.

Episode 57 – Vinyl Daze (Artwork – D. Hixon)

Earlier this year I decided to digitize my 45 records. It was a labor of love I embraced as well as  preparation for DJ-ing my collection out. On many a night I’d hover over my record player with album art in hand, a drink near by, and a best friend even closer as we vanished together into sound. My cat Yaz loved music, and I couldn’t listen to it without him nearby. He was my Assistant Music Director and constant companion throughout the arduous task of digitizing, categorizing, and cataloging the records heard on Vinyl Daze.

A couple months ago Yaz unexpectedly passed away and he’s been heavily missed since, therefore, this Podcast is dedicated to Yaz, vinyl, the eternal quest for more music, and life with surface noise. To Episode 57, Vinyl Daze.

You’ve Got A Best Friend Now: Kurt Vile – Ocean City

I’m still bumming pretty hard about losing my bud Yaz – I holed myself in my apartment yesterday and the night before, and per always, music was there to help me cope when feeling low. I instinctively was drawn to my Kurt Vile records, who’s been a favorite of mine for years, and has always struck a personal chord with me. “Ocean City” off of 2010’s Square Shell’s EP hit me the most directly, likely because I was literally interpreting the chorus, and as the night progressed I kept picking up the needle and restarting the song while sitting in the dark with drink in hand, and memories swirling in my head.

The slow but steady transition from Winter to Spring in New England is an interesting time. One day I’ll find myself despondent and dour, then within 24 hours I’ll be filled with reverie and hope. Such is the duality of the Region and this Mix.

New Album: Kurt Vile – Wakin’ On A Pretty Daze

Kurt Vile - Wakin' On A Pretty Daze

Wakin’ On A Pretty Daze

Kurt Vile is my favorite. I’m hopelessly twisted into liking anything he releases; it’s like being caught in a rip tide and trying to fight against the current. You can let it take you for a ride, or fight and drown – personally I prefer to ride, fighting nature is futile. Needless to say I was ecstatic to learn Kurt Vile was not only releasing a new album, but a massive double LP spanning 69 minutes and backed by his excellent band The Violators. Above is the video for “Wakin’ On A Pretty Daze”, which is legendary street artist ESPO creating the album artwork in a desolate industrial locale as some serious homage is paid to their native Philadelphia. The track is over nine minutes long which makes the comparisons of Vile and the Violators to Young and Crazy Horse somewhat justified, at least in my minds eye.

Wakin’ On A Pretty Daze will be released by Matador Records on 04/09/13. You can pre-order the album here, and download the Title Track via the Matablog. April can’t come soon enough, as I continue to ride this beautiful current. Yeah Yeah Yeahhhhhhh.
